Arms index
Definition 1.
Also known as a trading index (TRIN) (total up volume)/(total down volume). An advance/decline market indicator. Less than 1.0 indicates bearish demand, while above 1.0 is bullish. The index often is smoothed with a simple moving average.

Definition 2.
A market indicator used in technical analysis, calculated as follows: Arms Index = ((# of advancing issues / # of declining issues) / (Total up volume / Total down volume)). A value of less than 1 is considered bullish, greater than 1 bearish. also called Trading Index or TRIN.

Definition 3.
A market indicator that shows the relationship between the number of stocks that increase or decrease in price (advancing/declining issues) and the volume associated with stocks that increase or decrease in price (up volume/down volume). Richard W. Arms developed the Arms Index in 1967. Over the years, this indicator has been referred to by several other names including the Short Term Trading Index, TRIN, MKDS, and STKS.
