Capital loss
Definition 1.
The difference between the net cost of a security and the net sales price, if the security is sold at a loss.

Definition 2.
The loss incurred when a capital asset (investment or real estate) decreases in value. The loss is not realized until the asset is sold for a lower price than the purchase price.

Definition 3.
The decrease in the value of an investment or asset. opposite of capital gain.
