Nifty Fifty

Definition 2.
Term given to fifty blue chip stocks which were so popular prior to the bear market of 1973-1974 that their prices were temporarily driven up to ridiculous levels.

Definition 3.
A term unfamiliar to many younger investors, Nifty Fifty refers to the 50 large stocks most favored by institutional holders. A generation ago, such stocks were all the rage and ran up dizzying P/E ratios. Firms in the Nifty Fifty (which isn''t cast in stone) tend to be well-established and have strong earnings growth for a long time. General Electric is perhaps the quintessential Nifty Fifty stock.
