stock certificate

Definition 1.

A document reflecting legal ownership of a specific number of stock shares in a corporation. also called certificate of stock.

Definition 2.

A document that proves your ownership of shares in a particular company. In his book ''The Investing Kit,'' Bay Gruber says, ""When you buy stock, you have the option of receiving a stock certificate or letting the brokerage firm hold the certificate on your behalf (known as holding in street name). If you sell stock for which you hold a certificate, you must endorse the certificate to make it negotiable for delivery to the brokerage firm."" ""In lieu of endorsing the certificate, you may sign a stock power, which is a form duplicating the back of the certificate. If you sell stock held in street name, you need only instruct your broker to sell the shares. The certificate is already negotiable.""
